WADE PRESTON, THE MOVIN’ OUT BAND
AND MEMBERS OF THE BILLY JOEL BAND

In 2002, Tommy Byrnes, Billy Joel’s guitarist and musical director, was appointed by Joel to put together a band for the upcoming Broadway musical collaboration called Movin’ Out, using Billy’s music and Twyla Tharp’s choreography.

"I thought, if I could put together my dream band, and I can, who would I pick?" muses Byrnes.

The line-up is that of Broadway history now, as the show became a huge success. The chemistry was so good that the band decided to continue to perform together even after the show closed in December of 2005.

They were called the most dangerous band on Broadway. One reason behind the title was the power behind the extraordinary ten piece band. But they were also an on stage band, instead of in the orchestra pit like the majority of other Broadway shows, and carried a huge visual appeal.

Each member is a virtuoso in their own right, and the combination was, and is, undeniably "dangerous".

"We broke a lot of rules and stereotypes for Broadway," says Wade Preston, piano man and synth player from the original cast and band.

"Because of that, they called us the bad boys of Broadway. We’re proud of that title. We made Broadway history".

The show was nominated for ten Tony awards, and brought home two, one of which was for "best orchestration".

Movin’ Out ran for thee and a half years, presently the 47th longest running show on Broadway.

And while it’s not in the title, the Movin’ Out Original Cast Soundtrack was recorded live with no overdubs. Tommy Byrnes was nominated for a Tony for producing it, and it continues to sell well.

The individuals of the band are enjoying their own personal projects and successes as well as appearing in various lineups as The Movin’ Out Band and the Billy Joel Band quite regularly. Chuck Burgi (drums), Carl Fischer (trumpet), Mark Rivera, Andy Cichon and David Rosenthal (who are all long time members of Billy’s band and periodically subbed on the Broadway production of Movin’ Out) along with Tommy Byrnes, have been touring with Billy off and on since the show closed. All the musicians have been coordinating various projects together, schedules permitting.

"We’re like a family," Wade says. "We so enjoy each other’s company and playing. We used to look forward to doing the show every night, and still look forward to doing gigs as the Movin’ Out Band, or Wade Preston and the Billy Joel Band, or some mixture thereof. It really shows in the performance and you can hear it in the music. You can’t buy that kind of chemistry. You can only be lucky enough to be a part of it of it."
