The Movin' Out
Story

2002
To December of 2005
Thanks
to
Tommy Byrnes (Billy's
guitarist and musical director)
I landed the keyboard player chair

as well as the understudy to the lead "Piano Man" role
played by Michael Cavanaugh

a great gig, for I do at least
three shows a week as the lead...

in the band for Twyla
Tharp
and Billy Joel's Broadway production of
We opened in Chicago

at the Shubert Theatre
on
June 25, 2002.
My debut as the Piano Man was on June 29, 2002.
Our final performance at the Shubert was on
September 1st, 2002.
Previews began in New York City at the Richard Rogers Theatre
on September 30, 2002.
Opening night was on October 24, 2002.
We
closed on December 11th, 2005.
1331 shows.
Not a bad run, not bad at all.
The last show was amazing. The audience was applauding wildly ten minutes before
the curtain even opened.
The vibe in the theatre was electrifying.
The band was on fire. The passion of the dancers could be felt by everyone. The
performance was heartbreakingly beautiful.
Billy finished the night by playing Miami 2017 (I've Seen The Lights Go Out On
Broadway) and You May Be Right.
It was surreal.
I admit it. I cried a little.
Cavanaugh sent me a link to a little bootleg of Billy doing Miami 2017 on the
last night. Poor video quality and the sound doesn't link up with the picture,
but you can hear the excitement in the audience. I'm no-where to be found on the
video.

This was the most incredible thing I've ever experienced. I'm so proud to have
been a part of it. We made history.
Thanks
folks.
