Wade Preston is a singer/songwriter, composer
and pianist who performs regularly as a solo artist.
He most recently starred in the Broadway Musical Movin’ Out, and is an original
cast member.
In June and July of 2008, Preston had the honor of doing the rehearsals and
sound checks for Billy Joel in Hershey, PA and Shea Stadium, essentially as the
"Stunt Billy."
"Thanks for doing this," Mr. Joel said to Wade at a rehearsal in NYC. "You're
making my life very easy."
"That's the idea," Wade replied.
This historic event at Shea Stadium was the last musical event to happen there,
aptly called The Last Play At Shea, and was filmed to be released as a movie at
a later date.
With roots in classical, boogie, and New Orleans barrel house and second-line
style piano playing, Preston mixes Billy Joel / Elton John vocal styles with Ray
Charles passion. His keyboard abilities reflect his classical training mixed
with the passionate abandon of Jerry Lee Lewis.
Preston played the role of the
Piano Man in the Billy Joel / Twyla Tharpe Broadway hit Movin’ Out since
it’s inception in May of 2002 until it closed in December
of 2005, and is an original cast
member. He also covered the synth
chair in the band. He holds the record as the
Piano Man with the most consecutive shows performed
without a break, and he is the only Piano Man
who has played the lead role and the synth chair at the same time.
Preston played at the PA inaugural ball on January 20th, 2009 for
Governor Ed Rendell, Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack
Obama.
In June of
2009 Wade debuted his own Billy Joel tribute stage show called It's
Still Rock and Roll To Me using the original ten piece Broadway
Movin' Out Band, and sold out all three shows at Hoftra University's John
Cranford Adams Playhouse. He has also been performing his own solo show
called Piano, Microphone, Audience in small theaters around the
country.
Presently Wade is playing solo, a piano / sax duo, with a five, six, seven and
full ten piece version of the Movin’ Out Band, and with the Billy Joel Band when
they are not on the road. He has been performing mostly in theaters, corporate
and private events.
“Wade Preston is the fiercest piano player on the planet. If you don't
believe me, ask Billy Joel.” Tommy Byrnes
- composer, producer,
Billy Joel’s guitarist since 1989, Billy's musical director since 1995.
Piano
/ lead vocals performed by Wade Preston are
impressive, resonant and clearly in the mode of Billy Joel himself; the
orchestration is well in harmony with the lyrics, Joel's artistry”. Charles
Eichler - Chicago
“The ten-piece band, led by the excellent, relaxed Michael Cavanaugh
(Wade Preston, in the second cast, is even better)” Joan Acocella - New
Yorker Magazine
"If you took Harry Connick Jr., Doctor John and Jerry Lee Lewis, made
them all better piano players, and combined them all into one guy, he'd
be almost as good as Wade." Michael Cavanaugh - singer, pianist, composer, star of
Movin' Out.
"I've played with a lot of people and a lot of singers, but nobody
who is as soulful a singer as Wade. And, he is an amazing piano player.”
Kasim Sultan - bass player and back up vocalist for Todd Rundgren,
Meatloaf, Patty Smith, Patty Smythe, Celine Deion, Ricky Martin, Jon Bon
Jovi, and Darrell Hall.
